Teesside University and Teesside Lions have strengthened their basketball programme with the addition of American centre Ryan Flauto, who arrives on Teesside after completing a four-year NCAA collegiate career with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

The Northbridge, Massachusetts native will combine postgraduate study at Teesside University with high-level basketball, enrolling on the University’s Global Master of Business Administration (MBA) while representing both Teesside University and Teesside Lions.

Flauto arrives with an impressive academic and athletic background. A graduate of UMass Dartmouth with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, he spent four years as a varsity player with the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in NCAA Division III basketball.

During his senior season, the powerful centre established himself as a consistent presence at both ends of the floor, ranking among the top 20 nationally in NCAA Division III for double-doubles.

He recorded multiple 25-plus-point performances during his collegiate career, with a career-high 27 points against nationally ranked Keene State during his junior year, while his career best on the boards stands at 14 rebounds.

For Flauto, however, the opportunity to move more than 3,000 miles from Massachusetts to Teesside was about considerably more than basketball.

The opportunity to combine postgraduate education with basketball was central to Flauto's decision, but the Lions' work away from the court also struck a particularly personal chord.

Growing up in Northbridge, basketball and community were closely connected for the American centre. His mother served as president of the town's youth basketball association, giving Ryan an early introduction not only to playing the sport, but to coaching and supporting the next generation.

“A major draw for me was the club's deep commitment to the local community. Growing up, my mom was the president of our town’s youth basketball association, so I spent years helping run clinics, working games and coaching younger kids.

“Giving back and helping the next generation love the game is something very close to my heart, and seeing how active the Lions are across Teesside made this programme feel like the right fit right away.”

That combination of education, performance basketball and community engagement is at the heart of the developing partnership between Teesside University and Teesside Lions.

James Thomson, Coach and Director of the Teesside University Basketball Programme and Teesside Lions, believes Flauto is an excellent fit for that model.

“Ryan represents exactly the type of student-athlete we want to bring to Teesside. He has already demonstrated that he can perform at a very good level academically, graduating in Mechanical Engineering, while also committing himself to four years of NCAA basketball.

“We aren't simply looking for talented basketball players. We want people who understand what we are trying to build here; combining education, performance, personal development and genuine engagement with our community.

“What stood out in our conversations with Ryan was how naturally his values aligned with ours. His basketball ability is clear, but his academic ambition, engineering background and experience working with young people made him particularly interesting to us.

“For Ryan, the Global MBA adds another dimension to an already strong academic background. For our programme, we gain an experienced American college player who can make an impact for both the University and Lions. We’re really looking forward to welcoming him to Teesside.”

On the floor, Flauto will provide Teesside with a physical interior presence and four years of American collegiate experience.

His ability to score efficiently around the basket, rebound and control the paint will add another dimension to the Lions' front court.

James highlighted the multi department support in bringing Ryan to Teesside, adding:

The basketball programme is the latest in a string of high profile developments which include a partnership with Inter Miam FC, Beth Mead and Middlesbrough Ladies, George Friend and Stockton Town FC, and Grangetown Netball. The university is placing emphasis on developing its sporting prestige and the signing of Ryan Flauto represents another significant cog in the wheel.

Teesside Lions Men's Head Coach Serge Bojev is looking forward to integrating his new centre into the squad.

“Ryan gives us size, physicality and experience in an area of the court where those qualities are important.

“What I like is that he doesn't see his role as simply scoring points. He wants to rebound, compete physically and influence the game in the paint.

“We want players who are ambitious and prepared to work, and Ryan looks a very good fit. Now it is about getting him into our environment, building relationships with teammates and helping him adapt quickly to the British game. I think our supporters will enjoy watching him play.”

Flauto himself is equally clear about what he wants to achieve.

“On the court, my primary focus is simple: I’m here to win games and help this team compete for hardware.

“From an individual standpoint, I hold myself to a high standard. I’m aiming to consistently control the paint, average a double-double and shoot 65% from the floor.

“I can’t wait to get to work with the coaching staff and the guys, experience the energy from the fans at our home games, and make a real impact on and off the court this season.”

Flauto's move to Teesside also represents an important next stage in his professional development.

Having completed his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, he already has practical industry experience through an engineering internship in which he worked on the design of mechanical components and gear assemblies.

His longer-term ambition is to work in 3D CAD modelling and mechanical product design, before eventually establishing his own independent design firm.

Studying for a Global MBA at Teesside will allow him to complement that technical engineering background with greater knowledge of business, management and entrepreneurship.

It creates a student-athlete profile that extends well beyond the basketball court; something Teesside's developing programme is increasingly looking to provide.

Basketball has already taken Flauto from Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, where he helped his team to a 22-win season, through four years of NCAA competition at UMass Dartmouth and now across the Atlantic to the North East of England.

Away from basketball and engineering, he can often be found on the golf course, while his NBA allegiance lies with the Denver Nuggets and, perhaps appropriately for a skilled big man, his favourite player is Nikola Jokić.

His next challenge will now be in a Teesside jersey.

For Teesside University, his arrival adds another experienced student-athlete to a programme designed to give players the opportunity to pursue ambitious academic goals alongside competitive basketball.

For Teesside Lions, it brings an experienced NCAA centre with size, rebounding ability and a clear desire to make an immediate contribution.

And for Flauto, it represents the opportunity to combine three ambitions in one move: postgraduate education, high-level basketball and making a positive contribution to the community he will now call home.
